The flood, one of the deadliest in the state’s history, claimed over 158 lives, affected 503 households, and displaced more than 3,000 residents. The disaster also caused major infrastructural damage, submerging and destroying three critical bridges, which severely hampered rescue efforts and the delivery of aid.

In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, Governor Bago directed that only low-key observances should be held across all emirates. Traditional Sallah activities, including Hawan Bariki, Durbar processions, and other public gatherings, have been suspended.

“This decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic flood in Mokwa,” the statement read. “It is also intended to create space for mourning, prayer, and sober reflection across the state.”

Governor Bago extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the disaster and called on Nigerlites to mark the sacred occasion with compassion and solidarity. He urged residents to pray for the souls of the departed and to show kindness through acts of charity to those in need.

The canceled Durbar, a vibrant cultural parade featuring traditional rulers on horseback, is typically a centerpiece of Eid festivities. Its suspension highlights the seriousness of the crisis and the government’s prioritization of humanitarian response over ceremonial tradition.

Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting affected communities and pledged to intensify efforts toward disaster relief, recovery, and long-term flood prevention across the state.
