Speaking on Monday, July 7, while receiving Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), at the Presidential Villa, Shettima emphasized that Africa’s focus should remain on solving its most pressing challenges—such as poverty and climate change—rather than engaging in nuclear arms discussions.

“The outcome of any nuclear conflict is never a win-win situation; it is always the opposite,” he said. “We are fighting poverty; we are fighting a war against the relationship between the economy and ecology in sub-Saharan Africa. We have no business dabbling in anything that has to do with nuclear weapons.”

Shettima reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and commended the CTBTO for its global monitoring efforts.

“I want to assure and reiterate our commitment to a comprehensive nuclear test ban, and I appreciate your organisation for the extra vigilance—337 monitoring stations across the world is no small feat. All seven tests conducted by DPR Korea were detected,” he noted.
