Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olusewagun Olanrewaju passed away on Saturday, March 29, after collapsing during a bout against Ghana’s Jon Power Mbanugu, the Ghana Olympic Committee confirmed

The incident occurred during an undercard fight at the Ghana Professional Boxing League held at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

In a closely contested match where both fighters exchanged solid jabs, Olusewagun, 40, suddenly stepped back without being hit and collapsed against the ropes before falling to the canvas.

Ringside doctor and referee Richard Amevi rushed in to remove his gum shield and called for medical assistance. He was transported to the nearby Korle Bu Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Olusewagun was a former national and West African light-heavyweight champion.

Mbanugu, who was declared the winner by knockout, expressed mixed emotions after the fight. “I’m excited about the win but saddened by how my opponent went down,” he said.

The 22-year-old Ghanaian boxer, known as “Power,” now holds a record of 13 wins, one draw, and one loss under Osibor Promotions.
