The Defence Headquarters has issued a warning to individuals planning a nationwide protest, stating that while they have the right to peaceful protest, any attempts to incite anarchy will not be tolerated
The protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, is scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024, and is aimed at drawing attention to widespread hunger and inflation.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed a press conference in Abuja, stating that the military has uncovered plans by unscrupulous elements to hijack the protest and turn it violent, targeting innocent citizens and their businesses.
According to Daily Trust, Buba emphasized that citizens have the right to peaceful protest, but not to mobilize for anarchy and unleash terror.
He drew parallels with the ongoing violent protests in Kenya, warning that the planned protest’s level of violence could lead to anarchy.
The military will not stand by and allow anarchy to occur in Nigeria, Buba asserted, citing the country’s experience with wars and anarchy in other nations during peacekeeping operations.
