Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, a Nigerian consultant in urology, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery, has successfully performed Africa’s first UroLift procedure in Lagos, marking a major milestone in the treatment of prostate enlargement and advancing local medical innovation
The surgery was carried out at The Prostate Clinic (TPC) in Victoria Island, Lagos, introducing a modern, minimally invasive method for managing benign prostate enlargement without affecting sexual function.

Ekwueme described the procedure as a significant achievement for Nigeria and Africa’s healthcare sector. He said the UroLift offers a safer alternative to conventional surgeries, which often come with distressing side effects.
“The procedure gently lifts and secures the enlarged prostate tissue to open the urinary channel, eliminating the need to cut or remove tissue,” he explained. “This allows men to preserve normal sexual and reproductive functions, a major concern for younger patients.”
Not all patients are eligible, he noted, with suitability depending on prostate size. Men with a prostate volume of 80 millilitres or less may qualify after a thorough evaluation to rule out cancer or other complications.
Ekwueme highlighted the risks of untreated prostate enlargement, warning that the condition, while usually non-cancerous, can seriously affect urination and lead to long-term problems. Patients may experience frequent urination, incontinence, or total blockage requiring catheterisation, and prolonged neglect could result in permanent bladder damage or kidney failure.
The UroLift procedure can be performed under local or spinal anesthesia, allowing patients to return home within hours or by the following day.
