Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest, has passed away at the age of 104
Bishop Gabriel G. Dunia of the Auchi Diocese in Edo State confirmed the news in a statement. Oleghe reportedly d!ed peacefully at around 2:30 a.m. on November 24, 2024.
The statement, addressed to clergy and the Catholic faithful, read:
“With gratitude to God for a life well lived on earth, I hereby inform you of the passage of the Rt. Rev. MSGR Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria as of today, to the great beyond at about 2:30 a.m. this morning, November 24, 2024. He was of the Diocese of Auchi and died at the age of 104. May his lovely and gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
Bishop Dunia also announced that Oleghe’s funeral would be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
Monsignor Oleghe was known for his impactful service in various parishes, including St. John The Apostle Catholic Church in Igarra, Akoko-Edo local government, where he implemented transformative reforms that shaped the church’s current stature.
His legacy as a devoted servant of God and a pillar of the Catholic Church in Nigeria will be remembered fondly.
