The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has dismissed claims that about 150 bandits died in a boat accident in the Sabon Gida area of Sabon Birni Local Government Area in Sokoto State, describing the report as false

Speaking in Sokoto, the NIWA Area Manager, Bello Bala, said no such incident occurred, noting that the river referenced in the report is not even navigable.

He urged media organisations to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely on credible sources, adding that the agency remains available to clarify issues when needed.

Bala also highlighted ongoing efforts by NIWA to educate riverine communities on safety practices, including adherence to guidelines and the use of life jackets for water transport. He stressed that if any such tragedy had taken place, it would have been reported by local residents and water transport leaders.

In a similar response, a source from the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto also debunked the claim, confirming that no boat accident involving bandits had been recorded. The source added that troops are actively deployed across the area and no such incident has been reported.
