BREAKING: NLC suspends nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to apologize for the recent invasion of its headquarters, warning that failure to do so could lead to industrial action or other forms of protest.

Speaking in Abuja, NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, expressed concern over the raid, noting that even during military rule, the NLC’s premises were never targeted. He questioned the police’s motives, particularly why they raided the 10th floor late at night, despite claiming they were pursuing a suspect on the 2nd floor. Upah also challenged the police to provide the legal documents they claim justified the raid.

The NLC criticized the government’s silence and the police’s contradictory statements, which included allegations of an “international terrorist” being the target. The NLC demanded proof of any connection to terrorism and insisted that the police apologize for the unlawful raid.

The Congress also condemned the government’s interference in labor matters, particularly the proposal for a two-year tenure for labor leaders, calling it a violation of labor laws. The NLC warned that if the government insists on such a tenure, it should apply the same rule to the President and other public officers.

The NLC advised the government to focus on addressing the country’s pressing issues, such as economic policies causing hardship, rather than meddling in labor and opposition party affairs. They also called for the release of detained individuals, including a NUEE executive, and warned that the NLC is prepared to take its concerns to the international stage if necessary.
