Ajaero was taken into custody at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to a Trade Union Congress meeting in the United Kingdom.

The NLC’s National Administrative Council described the detention as “unlawful” and “a violation of workers’ rights and democratic principles.”

The council is demanding Ajaero’s release by 12 midnight and is also calling for the reversal of the recent fuel price increase.

The NLC has alerted its affiliates and civil society partners, warning that it will take further action if workers’ rights continue to be infringed upon.

An emergency meeting of the National Executive Council has been convened to address the government’s actions.

The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting workers’ rights and opposing oppression, urging the government to reverse its current stance and implement the new National Minimum Wage.
