A medical panel set up by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed that the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not life-threatening
The team, appointed by President Bola Tinubu at the directive of Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, was tasked with determining Kanu’s true medical status amid conflicting reports from both prosecution and defence doctors.

In its report submitted to the court on October 13 and partly read during Thursday’s session, the NMA panel stated that Kanu’s condition was stable and he was medically fit to stand trial.
Relying on the report and with no objections from either side, Justice Omotosho ruled that the trial could proceed as scheduled.
The judge also granted a request from Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), for a private meeting between Kanu and his legal team outside the surveillance of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Agabi had expressed concerns that discussions with his client at the DSS facility might be recorded.
Justice Omotosho approved that the private consultation be held in the courtroom from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on October 22, with only Kanu and his lawyers present. The trial is set to continue the following day, October 23.
