Students and teachers of Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College in Ogba, Lagos, narrowly escaped disaster on Monday when the four-storey building housing the school collapsed minutes after it was evacuated
The building, located at 11 Adudatu Street behind County Hospital in the Aguda area, gave way around midday. Witnesses said the timely evacuation prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
A resident told TheCable that concerns had been raised earlier when wooden planks fell from the roof, sparking alarm in the neighbourhood.
“The students narrowly escaped the incident. It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated that the structure collapsed,” the resident said, noting that the building had shown no obvious signs of imminent failure.
An elderly man reportedly alerted school authorities about the potential danger, prompting the swift evacuation. Another resident, Taiwo Ridwan, described the building’s distress in the minutes leading up to the collapse: “At first, the house started cracking little by little. The window frames had already fallen apart. After some minutes, the cement body of the house began peeling off. Not long after that, the building just sank.”
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later secured the site and restricted access. Part of the property, used for residential purposes, remained standing beside the collapsed structure.
No casualties have been reported so far. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has yet to release an official statement, and attempts to reach Margaret Adeseye, the service’s director of public affairs, were unsuccessful.
