No Ebola case in Nigeria - NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that no case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been recorded in Nigeria

The centre, however, assured Nigerians that it would continue to monitor the outbreak of the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and cases in Uganda linked to cross-border transmission.

But the centre urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid misinformation, while adhering to preventive measures such as regular handwashing, avoiding contact with bodily fluids of sick persons, bushmeats and dead animals.

It also advised members of the public to report any unusual illness promptly to the nearest health facility and to rely only on verified public health updates.

Healthcare workers were enjoined by the centre to maintain a high index of suspicion for patients presenting with compatible Ebola symptoms and relevant travel history.

NCDC Director-General Jide Idris said in a public health advisory yesterday that health authorities in DRC and Uganda have activated emergency response measures to contain the deadly virus.

According to Idris, the centre is working closely with stakeholders, including the Port Health Services under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to strengthen surveillance and preparedness across Nigeria, particularly in view of increasing regional population movement.

He stressed that continuous monitoring of global and regional developments remained ongoing to prevent importation of the disease into the country.

Idris said the agency is maintaining surveillance systems for Ebola and other epidemic-prone diseases while strengthening key response activities nationwide.
