Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has clarified that residents are not restricted from moving around during the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise
He made the clarification on Saturday in a post on X while responding to a social media user, Faveo Autos, who claimed someone had been arrested and taken to the Ikeja Police Station during the exercise and asked, “What is the fine for movement during environmental… Ikeja Police Station?”
Responding, Wahab wrote:
“There is no restriction of movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Lagos State. Any arrest made solely on account of movement is illegal and not in line with the policy of the Lagos State Government.”
He explained that the monthly sanitation exercise was reintroduced to revive and strengthen the culture of environmental cleanliness across the state.
According to the commissioner, although the initiative is backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, the law does not provide for any restriction on residents’ movement during the exercise.
Wahab added that the government’s goal is to encourage voluntary participation in environmental sanitation rather than rely on enforcement.
He also urged residents to embrace environmental sanitation as a civic duty and a collective effort toward building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
