Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been thrown into mourning following the reported suicide of Ajibola Ibitayo, a Dentistry student, allegedly linked to poor academic performance
According to a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, by Adebayo Idris, President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, Ibitayo took his life shortly after the release of examination results on August 12.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry. We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination result,” the statement read in part.
The association described the loss as not only the death of a promising young mind but also a painful reminder of the silent struggles many students endure. It extended heartfelt condolences to Ibitayo’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew him.
The statement also urged students to look out for one another and prioritize their mental health, stressing that no one should ever feel alone in their battles.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” it added.
