Chibuike Azubuike, known as the self-styled “Obi of Lagos” and recently arrested over an alleged fraud case, has issued a public apology to the Lagos State Government and the Oba of Lagos
Azubuike had sparked controversy after announcing plans to host an Igbo New Yam Festival in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, which drew criticism from residents who saw it as an attempt to impose Igbo cultural practices in a predominantly Yoruba state.

In a statement published in a national newspaper, he expressed regret for his actions and vowed to act responsibly moving forward.
“I, Mr Chibuike Azubuike, hereby tender this unreserved apology to the Oba of Lagos, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government, and the good people of Lagos State over my unguided proposal to hold the New Yam Festival scheduled for Saturday, 13th of September 2025, in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State,” he wrote.
Azubuike also clarified that the title “Obi of Lagos” was never self-assumed, attributing it to a printing error. “The caption therein as ‘OBI OF LAGOS’ was a typographical error from the print man,” he explained.
He emphasized that canceling the festival was a voluntary decision, dismissing claims of political pressure.
“Contrary to insinuations that it was politically driven, I am not a politician. However, if I ever decide to join politics in the future, I would align with the ruling All Progressives Congress to contribute to the progress of Lagos State,” he added.
