In a commendable show of integrity, Officer Ugochukwu has rejected a N10 million bribe, along with an iPhone 13 Pro Max and a Tecno Camon 19, allegedly offered by a suspected ritualist from Ezeagu, Enugu, in a bid to avoid arrest
Sharing his account, Officer Ugochukwu said, “On Wednesday afternoon, while on duty at my checkpoint in Gbaji along the Seme road, I saw a bike carrying a young man wearing a face cap. His face looked familiar because I had earlier received information about a wanted suspect, along with his viral photo.”
“I tried to stop the bike, but the rider refused to halt. I quickly got on another bike and pursued them. I caught up with them at another checkpoint ahead and ordered the rider to turn back. This time, I joined them on the same bike to ensure the suspect didn’t escape.”
“While heading back, the suspect stopped the bike and asked me what he had done. I brought out my phone and showed him his photo and the crime linked to him. He denied it, claiming the person in the photo was his brother, not him. He said he was returning from a bank in Agbara and insisted he was not a native doctor.”
The officer continued, “After a while, he offered me N10 million to let him go. I refused. He then claimed he was being set up by people in his community because it was his turn to become the Igwe. He added his iPhone 13 Pro Max and a Tecno Camon 19, saying the iPhone alone was worth over a million naira.”
“I still refused. I took him back to my checkpoint at Gbaji and snapped pictures of him that matched the viral ones. I sent a signal to my command at the Seme Border Patrol. After confirming he was indeed the wanted suspect, I handcuffed him and took him straight to our command headquarters. Some of my colleagues didn’t even recognize him—it was only me who did.”
The suspect is now in custody as investigations continue.
