The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed that its officers are legally empowered to force entry into premises when suspects resist lawful arrest

Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Victor Isuku, gave the clarification during an interactive session at the premiere of Greatest Oath (The Rescue), a film produced by Ocean Portal in partnership with the police, held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.

He explained that officers can lawfully break down doors, climb fences, or even enter through rooftops to apprehend uncooperative suspects. “The police can break down the door of an uncooperative suspect, enter through the roof, or scale the fence into his compound. Anyone who obstructs such an arrest will also be taken into custody,” Isuku warned.

On the issue of phone searches, he stressed that officers are not allowed to randomly check mobile devices. Such action is only permissible when there is reasonable suspicion of cybercrime involvement. “There are instances where a policeman can check your phone, particularly if you are suspected of cybercrime. But the police will not randomly stop you on the road to search your device, as such practice is unethical. The Inspector-General of Police strongly opposes it,” he said.

Isuku also reminded Nigerians that bail remains free of charge, urging them to carefully review bail forms before signing. He further appealed for public support, noting that citizens can assist the police with logistics and equipment rather than cash donations, since funding challenges affect institutions nationwide.

Speaking on the inspiration for the film, Ocean Portal CEO Dickson Oviase said the #EndSARS protests exposed the dangers of a society without functional policing. He emphasized the need for stronger community-police relationships, noting, “The absence of police will only lead to chaos. Strengthening community policing is the way forward.”

Zonal Police PRO for Zone 5, Tijani Momoh, also commended the project, highlighting its role in improving public awareness about police sacrifices and confirming that the Force provided logistics and equipment to support the production.
