Officials warn of ‘explosive’ wildfire season in Canada

Last year, 15 million hectares of forest were scorched, making it Canada’s worst wildfire season on record.

Minister Harjit Sajjan emphasized the link between wildfires and climate change, highlighting extreme droughts in southern regions. With temperatures rising and snow melting earlier than usual, the wildfire season is expected to start sooner and pose significant challenges.

To bolster firefighting efforts, the government plans to double tax credits for volunteer firefighters and allocate funds for specialized equipment. Last year’s devastation led to eight firefighter deaths and displaced 230,000 people.

While fires occur naturally, climate change exacerbates conditions, making wildfires more frequent and intense. With dozens of fires already burning, the threat looms large as Canada faces another potentially devastating season.
