A traditional funeral ceremony in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, ended in tragedy on Monday after a high chief was shot de.ad in what witnesses described as an accidental discharge.
The incident happened on October 5, 2026, while the chief’s colleagues were carrying out traditional rites in honour of a deceased member.
According to an eyewitness, tension broke out at the ceremony when a yet-to-be-identified person carrying a firearm suddenly fired a shot. The bullet struck the high chief in the head, k!lling him instantly.
Some residents who witnessed the incident said the shooting appeared to have been accidental.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
Jimoh said one suspect had been arrested and that the police had started a detailed investigation to determine exactly what happened.
