One of the FBI’s most wanted terrorists was arrested in Wales after more than 20 years on the run, US and British authorities said on Tuesday
Daniel Andreas San Diego, who has ties to animal rights extremist groups, is wanted by US authorities for his alleged involvement in two 2003 bombings in the San Francisco area.
Britain’s National Crime Agency said on X that the 46-year-old was detained on Monday in an operation supported by UK counterterrorism police and North Wales police “and now faces extradition to the US to face charges.”
“Daniel San Diego’s arrest after more than 20 years as a fugitive for two bombings in the San Francisco area shows that no matter how long it takes, the FBI will find you and hold you accountable,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray in a brief statement.
“There’s a right way and a wrong way to express your views in our country, and turning to violence and destruction of property is not the right way.”
On August 28 2004, two explosive devices went off about one hour apart on the campus of a biotechnology corporation in Emeryville, between the northern California cities of Berkeley and Oakland, the FBI said.
Less than a month later, a bomb strapped with nails exploded at a nutritional products corporation in Pleasanton, east of San Francisco. No deaths or injuries have resulted from the blasts.
A federal arrest warrant was issued for San Diego in October 2003 and in 2009 he was added to the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, making him the first domestic terrorist placed on this list, the bureau said.
The FBI had offered a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to his arrest.
