Organized Labour has announced that the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage is expected to begin by the end of August.

This information was shared by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission.

Ndubuaku explained that the slight delay in implementation is due to the various processes involved, such as the consequential adjustment, which includes calculating the new minimum wage across different levels from one to 16. He reassured that the delay is not an intentional move by the Federal and State Governments to avoid paying the new wage.

He stated, “We have no reason to suspect a deliberate delay. In reality, signing the wage bill is just a small part of the process. The consequential adjustment involves calculating the minimum wage starting from level one, step one, and then progressing from stage one to 13, all the way to level 16.

“So, it may take some time. Additionally, they are not compiling this alone. There are templates for the calculations, and they must also involve us in the process. As you may know, a committee is responsible for carrying out the necessary adjustments. We expect this process to be completed before the end of the month.”

This update follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the N70,000 minimum wage bill into law. However, only a few state governments have begun implementing the law, while some state governors have set up committees to oversee its implementation.
