Former Abia governors Orji Kalu and Theodore Orji met in Umuahia on Friday to strategize on reclaiming political influence from current Governor Alex Otti
Kalu said the meeting brought together political figures who served in the state between 2009 and 2023 to build a united front.

The Abia North senator proposed expanding the group, known as “The Team,” to include all former political officeholders from that period. He emphasized that the group played a key role in Abia’s development and should not be overlooked.
“Leadership is a relay race. I finished and handed over to Senator T. A. Orji, and he finished and handed over to Okezie Ikpeazu,” Kalu said.
“So one person cannot come and say we did nothing and that we are not relevant. If we did nothing, where would our people be living now? Our main purpose is that one person must go down in 2027.”
Kalu urged members to remain committed, highlighting that the platform is bipartisan and open to allies across party lines.
A key moment of the meeting was a motion moved by Chinedum Orji, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, to expand the group to include all political officeholders, including national assembly members, who served between 2009 and 2023. The motion was unanimously adopted.
Earlier in the week, Kalu criticized Otti, saying he “overrates himself politically” and would need support from key stakeholders to succeed. The comments came after Otti said he would back the Labour Party candidate in Abia North to challenge Kalu in the 2027 election.
