Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reaffirmed that the local government election in the state will proceed as scheduled despite concerns raised by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi

Fagbemi, in a statement on Thursday, noted that the court had reinstated local government chairmen elected under former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, who were removed through an Executive Order issued by Adeleke.
He argued that holding new elections before October, when the tenure of the chairmen and councillors elected on the APC platform would expire, would be illegal.
However, in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke insisted that the people of Osun were ready for the elections and that there was no turning back.
He reportedly made this remark while addressing a delegation of civil society organizations in the state to monitor the elections.
“I welcome you all to Osun State. Our people are prepared for elections tomorrow. They yearn to have their choices as chairmen and councillors. OSSIEC has also done a marvellous preparatory job, according to reports at my disposal. Several political parties are participating, and I believe there will be a level playing field for all to test their popularity with the masses,” Adeleke told the election monitors.
On the legal controversy surrounding the elections, the governor emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles.
“My advice to all parties is that democracy is hinged on the rule of law and that nobody can assume the authority of the courts.
“My advice to all parties, including local and national stakeholders, is to abide by democratic norms. As for me and my people, we stand by the rule of law, not illegal self-help.
“The election is going to hold, and the outcome will bring fast-tracked development at the local level. I urge our people to remain peaceful. Osun is a truly peaceful state.”
