More than 150 people are feared de.ad after a boat accident in Niger State
The boat, which was carrying over 300 passengers, mostly women and children, capsized during a journey on Tuesday for the Maulid festival celebration.
According to reports, the passengers were traveling from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community when the overloaded boat struggled to stay afloat in the rough waters of the River Niger.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, led by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), with help from the State Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government, local divers, and volunteers.
Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the Director General of NSEMA, confirmed the incident, saying, “NSEMA received a report of a boat accident that occurred on the night of October 1, 2024, around 8:30 pm along River Niger, upstream of Jebba Dam, at Gbajibo Community in Mokwa LGA.”
