Pastor Tobi Adegboyega loses deportation appeal in UK

A Nigerian pastor, whose church was shut down over an alleged £1.87 million fraud, has lost his appeal against deportation, despite arguing it would violate his human rights

According to Tribunal UK, an immigration tribunal has ruled that Tobi Adegboyega, 44, a cousin of Star Wars actor John Boyega, should be deported to Nigeria. The decision follows investigations, including one by The Telegraph, that revealed financial misconduct within his church.

Mr. Adegboyega previously led SPAC Nation, a controversial church closed after failing to account for over £1.87 million in expenditures and operating with insufficient financial transparency.

He argued that deportation would breach his right to family life under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), citing his marriage to a British woman. He also claimed the Home Office had overlooked his community contributions through SPAC Nation.

His legal team described him as a “charismatic” community leader who positively influenced hundreds of young people, primarily from London’s Black communities.

They argued his initiatives helped steer individuals away from crime and that his efforts had been praised by politicians, including Boris Johnson, and senior Metropolitan Police officials. However, no statements from these figures were presented in court.

The Home Office maintained that “all is not as it seems.” According to the tribunal, multiple iterations of SPAC Nation were shut down by the Charity Commission or the High Court due to concerns over financial mismanagement and lack of transparency.
