Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated N10 million to a Nigerian school in recognition of their victory in an international debate competition
Speaking during a visit to St. John Vienney Science College in Ukwulu, Anambra State, on Friday, Obi commended the students for emerging winners at a UK-Nigeria debate contest held in June 2025, where they outperformed several international schools.
He used the occasion to highlight the role of education in national development, criticizing successive governments for failing to invest meaningfully in the sector.
“The biggest asset of any nation is its people — human capital. And the most meaningful investment is in education,” Obi said. “If oil made countries rich, Venezuela would be the richest in the world. They have ten times more oil than Nigeria. But it’s not about oil, it’s about knowledge.”
Presenting a ₦10 million cheque to the school, Obi encouraged the students to keep striving for excellence, stressing that education remains the surest path to greatness.
He also took a swipe at Nigerian leaders, accusing them of focusing more on frivolities than on progress.
“This is the problem with Nigeria — our leaders are too busy celebrating, consuming, and wasting everyone’s time,” he said.
Obi praised the school’s proprietor, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, for stepping in where government has failed, commending him for his efforts in raising a generation of bright, disciplined students.
