Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has called for the adoption of a single five-year term for Nigeria’s president

Speaking in Bauchi on Friday during a courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi argued that eliminating the possibility of re-election would enable presidents to focus entirely on governance.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat it here: we should stop having a second tenure for president. It should be five years straight so that leaders come in knowing they have a job to do. What we see now is someone governing for one year, then spending the rest of the term thinking about re-election. We must stop it—focus on the work, finish your term, and go,” he said.
The 2027 presidential hopeful pledged that if elected, he would serve only one term, promising not to extend his stay beyond four years. He also vowed to strengthen political institutions, insisting that political parties must be bigger than the individuals elected under their platforms to ensure orderliness in governance.
Governor Bala Mohammed, in response, urged Obi to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying that was where he truly belonged.
“We want you to come back to PDP. Please come back because that is where you belong. Politics in Nigeria cannot be done with ego, differences, and personal interests. Opposition parties must work together for the sake of Nigerians,” Mohammed stated.
