Supporters of former presidential candidate Peter Obi have shelved a planned fundraising effort after it was met with strong public criticism over issues of transparency and relevance
The initiative, which involved opening four bank accounts to collect donations for a nationwide rally marking Obi’s birthday, was called off after Nigerians—both within and outside the Obidient movement—raised red flags about how the funds would be managed and why such fundraising was necessary.
The donation accounts were reportedly coordinated by Serah Ibrahim, Ezeokoli Blessing, and John Alor. However, the announcement sparked swift backlash, prompting the organisers to reconsider the plan.
In a statement on Tuesday signed by National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko, Director of Mobilisation Morris Monye, and Director of Strategic Communications and Media Nana Kazaure, the group acknowledged public concern and admitted that their messaging around the donations lacked clarity.
“We’ve taken note of the concerns raised regarding the accounts shared for the July 19 event in honour of H.E. Peter Obi,” the statement read. “We recognise that sharing account details without proper context may have led to misunderstandings. We accept full responsibility and offer our sincere apologies. We encourage everyone to direct their support to those in real need.”
Providing more clarity on the event itself, the organisers said the July 19 rally is titled “From Compassion to Purpose: Obidients in Action for a New Possible Nigeria,” and is intended to promote civic engagement and national reflection—not simply to celebrate Obi’s birthday.
