The Presidency on Sunday circulated a photograph purportedly showing President Bola Tinubu in a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris, but the image was later flagged on X as having been generated by artificial intelligence
The photo, which spread quickly across social media, was shared by President Tinubu and several of his aides. It appeared to depict the two leaders seated together during what was described as a private engagement in the French capital. In his accompanying message, the president said the discussion focused on global issues and Africa’s position in a rapidly changing world.
“This afternoon, I had a private lunch with H.E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda to discuss the current state of world affairs and advancing Africa in an ever-changing global landscape,” Tinubu wrote.

Supporting the claim, the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, also posted that the Nigerian leader was at a private lunch in Paris with President Kagame. The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made a similar post, adding the date of the meeting as Sunday, January 4, 2026.
However, an X note attached to President Tinubu’s post later cast doubt on the authenticity of the image. The note stated that although reports indicated a meeting between both leaders took place in Paris, the photograph itself appeared to be AI-generated, citing the presence of a GrokAI badge.
Grok is a generative artificial intelligence tool developed by xAI, a technology company owned by Elon Musk. The platform is capable of producing images, generating text responses, and conducting real-time searches.
The incident has sparked public concern about the use of AI-generated images in official presidential communications, especially in the context of an international diplomatic engagement.
