The Netherlands staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Poland 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener in Hamburg
Substitute Wout Weghorst scored the winning goal late in the game, overturning Adam Buksa’s early strike for Poland.
The Poles started stronger, with Buksa heading home Piotr Zielinski’s corner kick in the 16th minute, exploiting the Netherlands’ vulnerability from set pieces.
However, Cody Gakpo equalized with a deflected shot that beat Wojciech Szczesny, bringing the Netherlands back into the contest.
Both teams battled fiercely for the win, but Weghorst’s clinical finish from Nathan Ake’s pass secured the victory for the Oranje, marking their first win over Poland since 1980.
Weghorst’s goal was his seventh in eleven international appearances, showcasing his impressive form.
