Austria boosted their Euro 2024 knockout round hopes with a 3-1 win over Poland, thanks to Marko Arnautovic’s goal and a strong team performance
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria will likely secure qualification for the last 16 with a draw against the Netherlands on Tuesday.
Poland, who cannot finish in the top two, must defeat France to have a chance of progressing as one of the four best third-placed teams. Gernot Trauner scored an early header, but Krzysztof Piatek equalized for Poland.
Christoph Baumgartner restored Austria’s lead with a fine team goal, and Arnautovic sealed the win with a penalty.
Despite Robert Lewandowski’s introduction, Poland struggled, and Austria dominated the game, threatening to make the scoreline more embarrassing for Poland.
This victory marks Austria’s third win at a major tournament in 34 years, and they will be eager to continue their impressive form in the knockout rounds.
