The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Hafsat Abubakar, over the alleged creation and circulation of a fake notice claiming that OPay Nigeria Limited was shutting down its operations.
The development followed a petition by OPay over the viral notice, which allegedly caused concern among customers.
The police said a digital-forensic investigation traced the document to an X account allegedly operated by Abubakar, who was subsequently arrested.
OPay has meanwhile dismissed the shutdown claim, describing it as false.
“This claim is completely false. OPay is not going on any break. We remain fully operational, and our services continue as normal,” the company said.
The company also assured customers that their funds and accounts remained safe and accessible, describing the circulating claims as “entirely false, misleading and fabricated.”
The police said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
