Inspector Onu Ako, a police officer assigned to protect APC candidate Monday Okpebholo, was fatally shot on Thursday during a reception celebrating the reinstatement of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu in Edo State.
The incident occurred around 11 am along Airport Road shortly after Shaibu’s entourage departed from Benin Airport, according to Chidi Nwabuzor, a spokesperson for the state police.
In response to the tragedy, Commissioner of Police Funsho Adegboye issued a stern warning against political violence, promising that those responsible for the officer’s death would face justice.
The APC and PDP have engaged in a war of words over the incident. Philip Shaibu, who recently rejoined the APC after failing to secure the PDP governorship ticket, supported Okpebholo against PDP’s Asue Ighodalo in the upcoming election.
Shaibu returned to Edo State following his reinstatement by a Federal High Court order after being impeached by the state assembly. The court also directed the payment of Shaibu’s salaries and allowances from April, along with restoring his security details, despite ongoing tensions with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
