President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja after attending the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican in Rome

He arrived at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday evening and was welcomed by top government officials, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

While in Rome, Tinubu described his visit as historic, being the first Nigerian President to witness the inauguration of a Pope. He used the occasion to call on Nigerians to embrace the country’s diversity as a tool for unity and development.

“If we use our diversity not for adversity but for prosperity, the country’s hope is stability and progress,” the President said.

During his visit, Tinubu also met with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria who were part of his delegation. He commended them for their dedication to national development and urged leaders to remain committed to the welfare of the people.

Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, thanked the President for facilitating their participation in both the funeral of Pope Francis and the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV. He expressed hope for deeper engagement between the Church and the presidency moving forward.

Other bishops at the meeting included Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja, Archbishop Alfred Martins of Lagos, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of Sokoto Diocese.
