Pope Leo XIV WARNS about AI risks to humanity

Pope Leo XIV, the current head of the Catholic Church, has issued a strong warning about artificial intelligence in his first major Vatican document focused on the technology.

In the document released on Monday, he compared modern AI development to the Biblical story of the “Tower of Babel,” warning that humanity risks building powerful systems without fully understanding their long-term impact. He cautioned that such progress could end up harming people instead of helping them.

A major focus of his message was the use of artificial intelligence in warfare. He said the technology must be governed carefully, stressing it should face “the most rigorous ethical restraints” when used for military purposes.

He also warned that AI could weaken human dignity if societies become too focused on efficiency, speed, and profit over people.
Pope Leo XIV called for stronger laws, independent oversight, and greater accountability from major technology companies. He said control over such powerful systems should not rest in the hands of a small number of global players.

The pope has repeatedly described artificial intelligence as one of the most serious challenges facing humanity, urging governments and tech companies to act responsibly as the technology continues to advance.
