In a thrilling encounter at the Leipzig Stadium, Portugal staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener

Francisco Conceicao, a young Porto player making his competitive debut for Portugal, scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute, sending the Portuguese fans into raptures.
The Czech Republic had taken the lead in the second half through Lukas Provod’s stunning strike, punishing Portugal’s profligacy in front of goal. Cristiano Ronaldo, making history as the first player to feature in six European Championships, had several chances but failed to convert them.
Portugal equalized through an own goal, courtesy of Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek’s error, which saw the ball rebound into the net off defender Robin Hranac.
Diogo Jota’s 87th-minute header was disallowed for offside, but Pedro Neto and Conceicao combined in stoppage time to snatch a narrow win for Portugal.
This victory puts Portugal level on points with Turkey, who defeated Georgia 3-1 earlier in the day, in Group F.
Roberto Martinez’s side will look to build on this winning start as they seek to replicate their Euro 2016 triumph.
