The move is intended to reduce reliance on the national grid and provide a more stable power supply to the seat of government amid rising electricity tariffs.

The solar project comes as Nigerians grapple with high energy costs, especially under the new Band A tariff, which promises improved electricity supply at significantly higher rates. The decision to invest such a large sum in powering the Villa with solar energy has sparked public criticism, with many questioning the government’s priorities.

Critics have pointed out the contrast between the luxury of uninterrupted power at Aso Rock and the reality faced by millions of Nigerians who continue to deal with erratic electricity and inflated bills. Some have also highlighted the irony of the government pushing for solar energy for itself while solar imports remain costly and restricted for the average citizen.

The project is part of a broader push by the Federal Government to integrate renewable energy into public infrastructure. Earlier this year, N100 billion was allocated to provide solar mini-grids for selected federal universities and teaching hospitals, including the University of Lagos and University College Hospital, Ibadan.

While the shift to renewable energy is being praised in principle, the N10 billion allocation for the Presidential Villa has reignited debates over equitable energy access and government spending priorities.
