President Bola Tinubu has conferred the country’s second-highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The announcement was made during a bilateral meeting between the two leaders at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
President Tinubu described the honor as a gesture of Nigeria’s appreciation for India’s partnership.
Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Abuja on Saturday evening, was formally welcomed at the Villa’s forecourt on Sunday morning.
The ceremony featured the Indian national anthem, a Guard of Honour mounted by the Brigade of Guards, and the Nigerian national anthem. A 21-gun salute followed, after which Modi inspected the parade.
Subsequently, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi proceeded to a closed-door meeting in the President’s office. The leaders are expected to discuss and sign a series of bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in key sectors.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the visit seeks to strengthen the strategic partnership between Nigeria and India. “President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to boost collaboration in critical areas,” it noted.
This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria since Dr. Manmohan Singh’s state visit in 2007, which laid the foundation for the strategic partnership between the two nations.
