Prince Andrew could be ordered to pay £14million damages if he loses his US s.e.x abuse case.
Last night American lawyers also warned that due to “huge legal hurdles” facing accuser Virginia Giuffre, a hearing may be five years away.
That would mean the Queen, 95, would be more than 100 by the time her son faces trial, creating the possibility Charles would be on the throne.
Details of the potential payout came as Scotland Yard chief Dame Cressida Dick ordered a new review into the abuse claims made against Andrew in London by Ms Giuffre.
The Met boss said: “No one is above the law. It’s been reviewed twice before. As a result of what’s going on, I’ve asked my team to have another look at the material.”
Ms Giuffre has repeatedly blasted the Met’s refusal to launch a formal probe into her claims that paedophile Jeffrey Epstein “loaned her out” to Andrew in London in 2001.
On Monday, in a New York court, she accused the Prince of r3ping and s3xually abusing her when she was 17.
Andrew, worth an estimated £32.5m, has repeatedly denied her allegations and says he has no recollection of meeting her.
Given the severity of the claims, Ms Giuffre’s legal team will be seeking punitive damages – restitution that reflect a person’s wealth.
If the court finds in her favour, any damages Andrew pays would effectively have to come from taxpayers.
