Youth organisations across Kaduna State flooded major streets on Wednesday, calling for the release of former governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following his continued detention.

The demonstrators, who came from various communities, assembled at key points in Kaduna metropolis as well as parts of Southern Kaduna. They sang solidarity songs and displayed placards bearing messages such as “Free El-Rufai Now,” “Justice for Our Leader,” and “Kaduna Demands Governance, not Revenge.” Women, youths and older residents were visibly present in the crowd.

The protest erupted after the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) denied bail to the former governor following his arrest.

Addressing the crowd, Ibrahim Modibbo Sanusi of the Arewa Youth Movement condemned what he described as a politically driven action against El-Rufai.

“We are here to register our displeasure over the continued detention of our leader.”

“We demand his immediate and unconditional release. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”

He cautioned that the group could intensify its actions if authorities fail to respond to their demands.

“If this situation persists, Kaduna youths will have no option but to escalate our actions within the ambit of the law.”

He further warned that a one-million-man march could be organised in Abuja should the government refuse to release the former governor.

Sanusi noted that youths in Kafanchan, the headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area, also staged a peaceful solidarity protest in support of El-Rufai.

In Kaduna metropolis, protesters converged on the Western Bye-pass, a major commercial route, causing temporary traffic disruptions as security operatives were deployed to monitor the gathering and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
