The 33-year-old was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison in February 2024 for his involvement in smuggling over a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands via the port of Antwerp. He is also appealing an earlier conviction for stabbing his nephew at a family gathering in 2020. Shortly after that incident, Promes transferred from Ajax to Spartak Moscow for €8.5 million.

Earlier this week, Promes said in an interview that he was willing to return to the Netherlands for his appeal hearings—as long as he could remain free during the process. However, the Amsterdam court of appeal denied his request.

The Dutch public prosecution service has not commented on the arrest but previously stated that the extradition process was “at an advanced stage” and that “progress is being made.”

Promes, who earned 50 caps for the Netherlands, played for Dubai United FC this past season. He is currently out of contract and available on a free transfer, De Telegraaf reported.

His lawyer confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details.
