Award-winning Nollywood actor Ray Emodi has announced his exit from the film industry, citing personal and family reasons as well as concerns for his health and mental well-being
In a series of videos posted on his official Instagram page on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Emodi reflected on some of the difficult experiences he endured while shooting films in various parts of Nigeria.
“I have put in a lot of work in Nollywood. I shot a film in a town I won’t name, but we literally heard gunshots. There was chaos in a neighboring town, and we were still filming,” he recounted.
The actor explained that his decision to leave acting was influenced heavily by his family, who uphold strict rules and maintain a reputation that he felt he must respect. “This is a decision that has come with a lot of consequences. My family does not support this. I respect their decision, and I won’t do anything that would bring any stain to the name,” he added.
Despite his departure, Emodi acknowledged the many positive experiences he has had in Nollywood, noting that he had even turned down several film offers in recent times. He revealed that he plans to channel his creativity into music, sharing that he has already recorded and released a music project.
“I have been in crazy situations and had some of the best experiences of my life on set. It is not easy to say no when filmmakers call, but I had to stop saying yes,” he said. “I love music. I have always loved music. I make good music, and I want you all to come with me on this journey. I love every single Nollywood fan, and I am not leaving you — I’m just going to make music.”
Emodi also appealed to his fans to respect his decision and avoid resentment over his departure from acting. His announcement comes nearly three years after he briefly stepped back from the movie scene due to anxiety.
Before this move, Ray Emodi was a prominent figure in Nollywood, starring in numerous high-profile films alongside celebrated actors such as Mercy Johnson-Okojie, Uju Okoli, Sonia Uche, Maurice Sam, Ruth Kadiri, and Destiny Etiko.
