Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has spoken out against the practice of flaunting wealth at school reunions
In a series of tweets, Omokri criticized individuals who attend these events with the intention of showcasing their luxury items, such as Rolex watches and Bentley cars.
Omokri argued that such behavior can be detrimental to others, causing feelings of inadequacy, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.
He emphasized that school reunions should serve as opportunities to reconnect with former classmates and reminisce about shared experiences, rather than platforms for displaying wealth.
Omokri’s remarks encouraged individuals to adopt a more considerate approach when attending school reunions, focusing on fostering meaningful connections rather than competing in a display of wealth.
He wrote: “We know you are successful. But don’t go to your school’s reunion party with your Rolex and Bentley. It is just cruel! How do you expect your classmates who have not made it to feel?”
“Many of you have caused depression and even suicides by going to an occasion that is meant to bring back good memories only to create sad remembrances for your classmates.”
“Just show up and don’t show off. You don’t help, and you still want to oppress. What type of wickedness is that? You all started with nothing together. And nothing will follow you when you leave this world as we all must!”
