The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected attempts by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, calling the move “untenable” and cautioning against actions that could destabilize the state government
The rejection comes after the Rivers State House of Assembly formally began impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. Speaker Martins Amaewhule had described the governor as a “mistake” and accused him of gross misconduct, Vanguard reported.

In a statement signed by the APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party stressed its position:
“The attention of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has been drawn to the latest unfortunate developments coming out from the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly. While we acknowledge the legislature’s independence and its constitutional role in checks and balances, we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy.
“It would be totally untenable for our party to remain silent when the hangover of past strifes within the PDP are resurfacing within our ranks.
“The latest threat of impeachment centers on the budget. It is important to note that under the period of emergency rule, a budget was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025, approved by the Senate in June, and by the House of Representatives in July for a total sum of ₦1.485 trillion. This budget covers one year, running until August 2026. If the Governor is satisfied with it, he may choose not to present a supplementary budget. The constitution also allows a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year for a state governor.”
The APC further warned its members in the Assembly to resist outside pressures that could destabilize the Fubara-led government.
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements. We therefore call on members of the State Assembly, especially APC members, to immediately discontinue the impeachment process to protect the image of our great party and ensure the continued progress of Rivers State. Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the statement added.
The party reiterated its commitment to safeguarding democratic stability and the ongoing development of Rivers State.
