Players and officials of Rivers United have escaped serious injuries after the club’s team bus was involved in a road acc!dent on Thursday while en route to Anambra State for a President Federation Cup fixture.
The Nigeria Premier Football League side was travelling to Awka for a Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United when the incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, shortly after departing their team camp.
The accident caused panic within the club and the wider football community, as the bus was carrying players and officials ahead of the crucial cup tie.
In a statement, Rivers United confirmed that some individuals sustained minor injuries but stressed that no fatalities or life-threatening conditions were recorded.
“The club can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement read.
The club added that those affected were receiving medical attention and were in stable condition.
Management reassured fans that the safety and welfare of players and officials remained a top priority while the situation was being reviewed.
The statement also noted that updates on the team’s travel plans and the status of the scheduled fixture would be communicated once decisions are finalised.
