Russia has extended its ban on petrol and diesel exports until the end of the year due to fuel shortages caused by Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Thursday
“The measure helps us further secure the domestic market with oil products,” Novak said, according to the Interfax news agency, while acknowledging that the country is facing a fuel deficit.
Ukraine has targeted fuel depots and refineries as part of its defensive campaign against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
The shortages have already led to noticeably higher pump prices.
Russia initially imposed the fuel export ban in March to stabilize domestic supply, though the restrictions have also cost the government revenue crucial for its war effort.
Novak said the ban applies to all market participants with the exception of intergovernmental agreements.
Russian petrol stations have begun limiting fuel availability.
According to the newspaper Kommersant, the number of stations selling petrol fell by 360, or 2.6%, over the past two months, with shortages especially acute in the country’s south. Petrol production has dropped by roughly 10%.
