Sanwo-Olu orders demolition of fire-ravaged GNI building

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the controlled demolition of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building in central Lagos after a fire rendered the structure unsafe

The directive was issued on Friday when the governor visited the site on Martins Street. He said findings by a technical team showed that the intense heat from the blaze badly weakened the building, leaving it structurally unstable and posing a serious risk to the public.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the demolition would be done gradually and under strict safety guidelines to ensure the building does not collapse onto nearby shops or endanger passers-by.

As part of safety measures, all shops along Martins Street have been shut, with traders instructed to evacuate their goods and move to safer locations.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has established a help desk at the scene to support families searching for missing persons or seeking details about individuals who may have been in the building during the incident.

While no specific date has been announced for the demolition, the governor assured residents that emergency responders and safety officials would remain on ground, adding that the area would be properly secured to protect surrounding properties in the busy commercial zone.
