Residents of Odo-Kekere Community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, were thrown into panic on Thursday evening after part of a building at a local public school suddenly collapsed.
The incident, which occurred after school hours, has been described by some as divine intervention
A source said a section of the school structure gave way with a loud crash, drawing neighbours to the scene. First responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) arrived promptly, cordoning off the area to ensure public safety.
Preliminary reports confirmed that students were not in the classrooms at the time, though authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse and the extent of the damage. Emergency teams are conducting search and rescue operations to ensure no staff or security personnel are trapped in the rubble.
An eyewitness, Mrs. Boluwaji Aderinto, who lives next to the school, said the incident has heightened concerns among parents and community leaders over the safety of aging school infrastructure in the area. She said, “We heard a loud crack and then dust everywhere. We thank God it didn’t happen in the morning when the children were in their desks. This is a wake-up call for the government.”
Officials from the State Ministry of Education visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment. A senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed, “We have officers on site, including the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, already assessing the situation for further action.”
The collapse has renewed calls for urgent renovation and overhaul of school buildings across Lagos, as concerns grow over the safety of students and staff in both public and private schools.
