Senegal’s newly-elected president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has named Ousmane Sonko as prime minister, marking his first official action in office
Sonko, a prominent political figure and supporter of Faye, was unable to run in the recent presidential election due to a defamation conviction, though he maintains his innocence.
Running under the joint campaign slogan “Diomaye is Sonko,” they garnered significant support, resulting in Faye’s victory with over 54% of the vote.
Following his inauguration, Faye wasted no time in appointing Sonko as prime minister, emphasizing their partnership in leading the country.
Sonko expressed his commitment to supporting Faye in his new role, stating that he would present a list of proposed ministers for approval.
The appointment reflects Faye’s efforts to consolidate power and incorporate key allies into his administration, particularly given Sonko’s popularity among Senegal’s youth.
