Notable Nigerian musician and son of the legendary Fela Kuti, Seun Kuti, has finally revealed details on why his father married 27 women in one day in 1978
In a recent appearance on the ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ podcast, Seun revealed that his father’s unusual decision was a bold move to protect the reputation of the women who worked with him.
According to Seun, Fela’s female backup singers and dancers lived with him in the same house, which led to rumors and media scrutiny, labeling them as “prostitutes.”
To fight this, Fela asked the women if they would agree to be his brides, and they all consented.
This mass marriage was a deliberate attempt to preserve their dignity, shielding them from further media ridicule and societal judgment.
Seun explained, “My father was under immense media propaganda. He was highly scrutinized, and most of it was directed towards the women in his life – his female backup singers, dancers. They all lived together with my dad, but the media started calling them prostitutes. So, my dad, to preserve their honor and dignity, asked them if they would choose to be his brides, so nobody would call them names anymore, and they all agreed. That’s how the marriage happened.”
